This summer, the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama will host a ten week NSF REU Site program in the field of fluid mechanics. Projects will implement both computational and experimental analysis tools. This exciting research opportunity begins the last week of May and is available to six to eight motivated US engineering or science undergraduates with a 3.0 GPA. It is strongly encouraged that applicants have successfully completed a sophomore-level course in fluid mechanics, earning a grade of B or higher.

Faculty across three engineering departments (Aerospace Engineering & Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical & Biological Engineering) will act as research mentors for the program. The research areas cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to combustion studies, boundary layer measurements, wind tunnel studies on membrane wings, supersonic flow visualization, magnetic fluid mechanics, and computational analysis of turbulent jets.

During the program, students will
•  participate in hands-on, supervised research in the field of fluid mechanics
•  attend weekly workshops/seminars focusing on graduate school and career preparation
•  tour facilities at AEDC and NASA MSFC as well as visit other regional attractions
•  present research results at a summer-end symposium
•  attend and/or present research results at the APS Conference in November.

Interested students can access more details, including the application form and a listing of other required application material, via the links to the left.

The application deadline is April 4, 2008.  Women and minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.
