Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering
- MSAE Thesis Option
- MSAE Coursework Option
- The University of Alabama Graduate School
- The University of Alabama Quest Program
Notice to Graduate
Students--starting January 2004, the AEM department will no
longer offer undergraduate QUEST courses. Students who have not had
the undergraduate
prerequisites or equivalent material must take these
courses from another university or college. For students that do not
have an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering or have not taken an
undergraduate aerodynamics course, AEM 614 Airfoil and Wing Theory will be
required as part of the degree program. It is recommended that AEM
614 be taken after the required course AEM 500 and before the required
course AEM 668.
MSAE Degree Description
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics offers a Master
of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering (MSAE) through traditional
on-campus teaching methods and off-campus via the QUEST (Quality University
Extended Site Telecourses) program by which courses are videotaped and
mailed to students.
The MSAE degree can be earned by coursework only or by a combination
of coursework and approved thesis work.
Most QUEST students elect to complete the coursework degree option,
whereas most on-campus students supported on assistantships are expected
to complete an approved thesis on a research topic. However, QUEST and
on-site students may select either option with the consultation of their
advisor and graduate program director.
The MSAE degree program offered at The University of Alabama places an
emphasis on three areas of specialization of the aerospace engineering
field: (a) flight dynamics, simulation, and controls, (b) flight vehicle
structures and materials, and (c) aerodynamics and propulsion. A wide selection of courses is offered in these areas, and courses are offered in additional
areas of aerospace engineering as faculty expertise and availability
allows.
