Ph.D. ESM Degree Description
Engineering Science can be defined as an engineering field that specializes
in the development of techniques and methods for advanced engineering analysis.
Mechanics is often defined as the study of the response of bodies when subjected
to forces.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics offers a Doctor of
Philosophy degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics (Ph.D. ESM) through
traditional on-campus teaching methods. The Ph.D. ESM degree is a research based
degree, in which students are required to complete an approved dissertation on a
research topic.
The Ph.D. ESM program offered at The University of Alabama places an
emphasis on three areas of specialization of the engineering science and
mechanics field: (a) fluid mechanics, (b) solid mechanics, and (c) dynamics. A
depth of courses is offered in these areas, and courses are offered in
additional areas of engineering science and mechanics as faculty expertise and
availability allows.
